The Concepts of Education among the Ancient Greeks and Hebrews
This article is a preliminary investigation into the relations between 'education' and 'law' in the philosophical, religious, and literary expressions of the Ancient Greeks and the Ancient Hebrews. While the Greek concept of education emphasised the cultured free man as a citizen and the philosophers urged the city state to legislate in support of such education, the Hebrews stressed the law as divine ordination and expected education to conform to the revealed law.
In contrast, the ancient Chinese placed education far above law, and restricted the latter to the incorrigible. This contrast should lead to rewarding studies in the future.
