Instruction and the Cultivation of Thinking

Current cognitive research in teaching higher order thinking skills was reviewed. Possible success was demonstrated on efforts aimed at teaching particular kinds of higher order cognitive skills and those aimed at cultivating disposition to apply those skills. Development of "general skills" in thinking was thought not as practical as learning to practise thinking and reasoning in the discipline-embedding programmes. Social interaction as an instructional model to develop higher order cognitive abilities was crucial in shaping the disposition to critical thinking in students.
