Identity Formation among Hong Kong Youth: An Exploratory Study

The identity crisis of adolescence has traditiondly been thought of as invloving two processes: (1) a confusion among alternatives and (2) a making of commitments. Thirty-five autobiographies of Hong Kong youth were analyzed for degrees of confusion and commitment in four areas: occupation, political ideology, religious ideology and attitudes toward love affairs and marriage. The validity of including both political and religious ideologies as major contents of youth identity in the Chinese culture was questioned. Research hypotheses were formulated for futher inquires.
